Rose painted Calathea
Calathea roseopicta ‘Dottie’
A tropical plant with bold leaves with a feathery pink pattern running along the inside of the leaf edge. It’s a real beauty and instantly catches the eye, making it a popular one with the collectors or someone looking for something different.
Originally from the tropical rainforests of Brazil, this tropical beauty makes such a statement with the lovely pink pattern on the large and bold leaves. This plant combined with a complimentary pot on a countertop or even on the floor will allow you to appreciate the true beauty it has to offer. Best viewed from the top. It is also known as the ‘Prayer plant’ due to the unusual folding of the leaves at night and then unfolding again in the morning. Coming from the tropics, this plant could offer a small challenge in the way that it requires humid conditions to get optimum growth. Place the plant on a pebble tray to achieve this and mist the leaves regularly in warmer conditions to avoid browning of the tips. They do particularly well in a grouping with other plants, especially with other Calathea species.
Supplied in a 15cm nursery pot.
Plant size of 45cm tall, inclusive of the pot, and 30cm wide.
Will fit into a pot cover size of 16-18cm wide and 14cm deep.
More compact growth habit than the other Calathea species. It reaches a height of around 60-70cm and a spread of approximately 50cm.
Bright conditions, but no direct sunlight. They enjoy a humid environment, so they will thank you in kind if you are to place them in a tray with pebbles and keep that topped up with water to increase the humidity in the surrounding area. Not advised for colder rooms or rooms with big fluctuations in temperature.
Keep the soil moist around the roots during the warmer times of the year and then reduce that when it cools down. They do not enjoy hard water, so either water with soft water, distilled water or collect rainwater and use that.
Health concerns and benefits:
Non-toxic to humans and pets.
It is known for having strong air-purifying abilities by filtering airborne toxins and converting that to oxygen.
Soft scale and mealybug insect generally evident when there is poor ventilation/air circulation in the room. Overwatering in cooler conditions can be a problem as well.
