Calathea ornata

Botanical name:

Calathea sanderiana var.ornata

A tropical bushy plant with bold leaves with striking pink-tinged lines. One that most certainly catches the eye!

Originally from the tropical rainforests of Brazil, this tropical beauty brings about a certain elegance and a splash of colour to your houseplant collection. It is also known as the ‘Prayer plant’ due to the unusual folding of the leaves at night and then unfolding again in the morning. Coming from the tropics, this plant could offer a small challenge in the way that it requires humid conditions to get optimum growth. Place the plant on a pebble tray to achieve this and mist the leaves regularly in warmer conditions to avoid browning of the tips. They do particularly well in a grouping with other plants, especially with other Calathea species.

Health concerns and benefits:

Non-toxic to humans and pets.
It is known for having strong air-purifying abilities by filtering airborne toxins and converting them to oxygen.

Known concerns:

Soft scale and mealybug insect generally evident when there is poor ventilation/air circulation in the room. Overwatering in cooler conditions can be a problem as well.
