Areca Palm (Bamboo Palm)
Dypsis lutescens - formerly known as Chrysalidocarpus lutescens
A lush and bushy tropical palm with feathery arching fronds that give it the reputation of being one of the best feature plants for a bright position indoors.
Originally from the humid tropical rainforests ranging from the islands of the Philippines, Malaysia, and India, across Southeast Asia to Melanesia, the Areca Palm finds its natural place in a bright and well-lit area of the home to create a relaxing ‘tropical feel’ to the room. As they age with growth, they can develop yellow stems reminiscent of bamboo and create a nice clump of graceful arching lush fronds that demand attention in the right position.
This plant does require more care than others as it prefers not to dry out too much and will require repotting every three years to get the best growth out of it.
Supplied in a 16cm pot.
Plant size of 70cm tall, inclusive of the pot, and 40cm wide.
Will fit into a pot cover size of 17-19cm wide and 16cm deep.
Supplied in a 21cm nursery pot.
Plant size of 1.1m tall, inclusive of the pot, and 45cm wide.
Will fit into a pot cover size of 22-25cm wide and 21cm deep.
Tall and clump-forming. They can reach a height of around 3m and a spread of 2m, but this is unlikely indoors if they are grown in a container.
Bright conditions, but no direct sunlight. Avoid placing it near a radiator in the room.
Keep the soil moist around the roots at all times, so regular watering required during the warmer months and less in the winter months. This palm will benefit from a regular misting of the foliage when the room is warmer than average and especially if the heating is on for longer periods of time during winter.
Health concerns and benefits:
Non-toxic to humans and pets.
It is known for having strong air-purifying abilities by filtering airborne toxins and converting them to oxygen. This plant has been listed as a top 10 air-purifying plant in a NASA study.
Soft scale and mealybug insect generally evident when there is poor ventilation/air circulation in the room.
